Liverpool’s coach Beard admits they need one more win to stay up

Liverpool manager Matt Beard claims his team likely requires one more victory to secure their survival in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Matt Beard stated in the pre-match press conference that his team needs only one more win to secure their place in the Barclays Women’s Super League for next year.

Liverpool is set to play against Brighton & Hove Albion, a team that recently underwent a change in management. Beard also expressed his belief that Brighton & Hove Albion, now under the leadership of new head coach Melissa Phillips, will do enough to stay in the league.

“Mel (Phillips) is a good manager,” Beard said. “It was a surprising appointment with her just going to America but she’s made a fantastic impact already.

“Brighton are a good team with a fantastic set-up and they have some good players. I guess at the start of the year, they lost their way a little bit but looking at how the fixtures pan out, I’m sure they will be ok.

“With how the results have gone, we probably need one more win to guarantee that safety. It will be a tough game but we’re looking forward to it.”

Beard praises ‘fantastic’ Brighton

Beard is familiar with Brighton & Hove Albion’s style of play despite the recent change in management. He is aware that this weekend’s match will be Phillips’ third game in charge of the team.

He said “It’s very similar to London City Lionesses, they are very compact. You could see in the Manchester United game that they went between two formations.

“They are quite direct. Brighton get bodies forward and they want to play in the opposition half to put them under pressure. They have scored five goals in the last two games. But they also conceded five.

“Brighton have had two really good performances against two good sides so we need to be prepared.”

Liverpool’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Barclays Women’s Super League is on Sunday.
