Spain prosecutors want 30-month jail sentence for Luis Rubiales over Hermoso kiss

Spanish prosecutor is seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for former Football Federation chief Luis Rubiales over the Jenni Hermoso kiss scandal.

According to reports in Spain, a prosecutor at Spain’s High Court has requested a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Luis Rubiales. The former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president is facing charges of sexual assault and coercion. The prosecutor also wants Rubiales to be prohibited from contacting Hermoso or coming within a 200-metre radius of her for four years.

Rubiales kissed Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the World Cup last August. Hermoso accused Rubiales of sexual assault for kissing her on the lips without her consent.

The prosecutor also accused the former coach of Spain’s women’s national team, Jorge Vilda, the team’s current sporting director, Albert Luque, and the federation’s head of marketing, Ruben Rivera, of coercing Hermoso into saying the kiss was consensual. Prosecutor Marta Durantez has requested 18 months sentences for each one of them.

Durantez wants Rubiales to pay €50,000 in damages to Hermoso, and another €50,000 jointly paid by Rubiales, Vilda, Luque, and Rivera.

Due to Spain’s criminal code, Rubiales may avoid going to prison because none of the sentences imposed individually exceeds two years.
