Barcelona sack Xavi with Hansi Flick set to replace him

Barcelona have sacked manager Xavi Hernandez after a strange U-turn on their decision to keep him. Former Bayern boss Hansi Flick is rumored to replace him.

Xavi and Barcelona have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions in the past few months. The former Barcelona captain announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season due to growing discontent from the club and the fans.

Following a set of good results from Blaugrana and their advancement in the Champions League as well as Xavi’s rejuvenation of the Barcelona squad with La Masia squad, there were rumblings that Barcelona would ask him to reconsider his stance on resignation.

Xavi finally agreed to stay at the club beyond the 2023/24 season but without any trophy, there were doubts creeping in.

Now, only 30 days after his announcement to stay, Barcelona have confirmed his sacking!

Barcelona released a statement on their official website: “The president, Joan Laporta, announced this afternoon to Xavi that he will not continue as coach of the first team in the 2024-25 season.

“The meeting took place at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and the sports vice-president, Rafa Yuste, and the sports director, Anderson Luis de Souza, Deco, as well as Xavi’s assistants, Oscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre, were present.

“Barcelona would like to thank Xavi for his work as a coach, which adds to an unparalleled career as a player and captain of the team, and wishes him all the luck in the world.”

Xavi had a 62.7% win rate in his 142 matches in charge of his boyhood club. He introduced the likes of Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Fermin Lopez to the first squad.

There has been strong rumors that the former Treble-winning Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick will replace Xavi at the club, with an official announcement coming soon.
