Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants Xavi to stay on as head coach

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says he wants Xavi to continue as the manager after this season.

Xavi Hernandez announced in January that he will step down as coach of Barcelona at the end of the season. Despite Barcelona’s good form in recent weeks, Xavi insisted he has no regrets about his decision.

However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he wants Xavi to stay at his post after this season.

“I want Xavi to stay. I have already spoken to him and I insist on that. We made a commitment with Xavi that we will talk at the end of the season. Sometimes decisions are reconsidered,” said the president during a chat on the Barça One Podcast.

Yes, absolutely. He already knows. I’d like him to stay,” he also said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.

“He keeps saying he’ll leave in June, but we’ll see. We don’t want to put this pressure on ourselves to make a decision for ourselves because the way things are going is working for us now.

Barcelona is eight points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid and will face them at the Bernabeu on April 21, 2024. Laporta believes that Barcelona can still defend their La Liga title this season.

He added: “If we want to win La Liga, we must win at the Bernabeu, and after that there will be six matches that will be difficult for them and for us.

It will depend more on the teams struggling to avoid relegation. The league has not been decided yet and we will fight to achieve it.”

Barcelona will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals and Atletico Madrid or Dortmund in the semi-finals.

“I’m very excited to reach the final and win it. Let’s see if we can beat Paris and then the winner from Atletico-Dortmund,” he said.
